The year 2018 is ringing the bells of a situation which has creased many eyebrows across the world. According to the World Meteorological Organization, this is the fourth warmest year on the records. The report stated that the average temperature of the globe for the first 10 months of 2018 was 1C more than the level of temperature recorded in 1850-1900.
The State of the Climate Report has mentioned that in the past 22 years, 20 warmest years have been recorded, among which 2015-2018 has taken the position of top 4. The WMO is worried if the trend continues at this rate; the global temperature may rise by 3C to 5C by the end of 2100. It has also mentioned that the climatic phenomenon of La Niña has contributed to a slightly lower rise in the temperature in 2018. This phenomenon is related to the lower than the average surface temperature of the sea. However, the researchers are expecting 2019 to be slightly warmer than 2018 as a weaker version of El Niña is about to emerge.
In 2018, the temperature rose by 0.98C, which was confirmed by five independent sources. The scientists have also confirmed that the resultant temperature of the globe is due to the long-term trend of the raised temperature. The temperature of the sea level has risen along with the melting of glacier and ocean acidification, which are the clear indications of a drastic climatic change.
The Secretary-General of WMO, Petteri Taalas has stated that the organization is not on the right track to cope with the climatic alterations of the temperature increase. He further mentioned that the concentration of the greenhouse gases is at a record height and may lead to a significant rise in the global temperature by the end of the century.
